Look at the acer 5601 and 5062 AWLMi. I have the 5601 and love it. It was $1599 australian. I am pretty shure that you can get it in the us. It is windows vista compatible (but i would not change over yet as there will be heaps of bugs when it first comes out) and has heaps of power to run games, as well as 3D drawing programs, and all of the office programs that you can get.

Based on your list of activities I would suggest you look at a Mac and consider that a benchmark for comparing any other option.

Make sure you consider the software costs as the Mac comes with many solutions for most of what you are going (iLife) while on the PC there might be an extra charge.

A big concern is the idea that you want to use the portable as a gaming machine. No portable is going to be great for playing games. The video hardware will be pushed to the limit if you play many of the more graphical games. Hence a Mac or a PC is likely to be only average as a game machine.

Mac all the way. Preferably MacBook Pro.
1 gig RAM
140 GB Hard Drive.
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.something processor.
These are the Minimum specs. Price Starts at US $1999.
MacBook - Starts at $1099.
Then, I reckon you will need to install windows on it. A new Windows Vista Home Premium costs $159 new.
I hope this helped.
