You know, Johnny/Suzy, ours isn't the only religion in the world. Many people believe many different things. In fact some religions have more than one god. Rome, Greece, Norway, Egypt, etc.
Go from there. Good luck. Have fun.

Well first of all if you like you could always try it this way say that the greek gods were created by man to explain the world around them, act as a means of exploration, provide legitimacy and authority to ancient Greek aristocracy, and provide entertainment for the masses. If I were you however I'd first of all before getting into Poseidon and Athena and things mentioned above I'd start off by telling them about Zeus who in Greek mythology was the king of all the greek gods and you could probably find some books off of ebay just look in the mythology section and you'll be sure to find something even if they are for adults I'm sure you could break down the larger words for them to be able to understand and if you don't want to try that why not take a flick through this website http://www.historyforkids.org/learn/greeks/religion/greekrelig.htm
well i hope this helps you out, an interesting topic to talk to kids about by the way.

Children do really ask a lot of questions specially when they are on their school age. The best thing to do is to buy a book about greek gods and show them the pictures in this way children can understand you well. Because this is how I answer questions to my children. I always use pictures or the internet or make it like a story telling. hope it will help you and most of all you should have lots of patience. Goodluck and I know you could do it.

Actually, you've got really great responses so far. All I'd like to say is that the Greek gods have always been my favorite. Last year I found a copy of my favorite childhood book on Greek myths. The book is called D'Aulaires Book of Greek Myths, by Ingri and...(I forget) D'Aulaire. I would highly suggest getting this book for your child. It will also encourage reading (trust me). The book is no longer in print, but you can find it on ebay for about $35 (I have two copies). There is another of their books that has been reprinted in England dealing with the Norse myths. Each of these books have beautiful color and black & white pecil and chalk illustrations. Sorry to go on about nothing, but I couldn't resist plugging these great books!

Tell them that it is a religion and that the Greeks believed that 12 different gods were specialized to do unworldly acts such as love, wind, rain, etc. They believed that if they worshiped these gods that the gods would be good to them.
