My computer recently crashed and I had to reinstall win xp pro again. When the installation was done everything worked except for my usb ports. I checked the device manager, and tried the add new hardware wizard and everything seems to be installed. Yet when I plug in my ipod, psp, camera, etc... nothing happens and they are not recognized. What can I do to fix this? Thanks!

do not panic at all . just that there might be some problem when u installed windows Xp. files relating to the USB could have been missing or Corrupted.
now., 1. either reinstall XP or search the Devices after u plug them by the detect / scan devices process in the hardware profile (right click the my computer ICON) and go to Device manager.

Some good answers here. Possibilities:

1) Problem: USB drivers weren't installed properly with Winxp Pro. Solution: Click start, right click my computer, click properties, click hardware, click device manager. At the bottom of the screen you see Universal Serial Bus Controllers or sumsuch. Right click it to expand it. Right click each one of these things, delete them, and let Windows reinstall them automatically.

2) Problem: USB ports disabled in computer's BIOS. In this case no amount of software or hardware fiddling will make the ports work. Solution: On boot, try to read the screen to see which key to press to enter your computer's BIOS. Usually it's the delete key, which you can press once or twice after the one startup beep. Once in the BIOS look for onboard peripherals and enable the USB ports. Be sure to save your BIOS before your exit and reboot. Once enabled Windows should install the drivers.

3) maybe autoplay is off for your "removable drives" Solution: Try the Autoplay Repair tool from the link below.

4) I suppose it is possible that you can solve your problem the same way as this person did - follow the thread of the second link below to around the middle (changing the drive letter to something else)

You say they are installed. Do you mean you just saw the devices listed, or did you go a step further and check the properties of each item? Checking properties will tell you if the item is working properly and will give you an opportunity to update the driver.

Go back to device manager, find the usb ports, click properties, uninstall the ports and reboot. Reinstall when prompted and there's an excellent chance they will work again.

1. u must check on BIOS, did the usb port enabled or Disabled
2. If Your PC have usb 2,0 u must Install win xp pro with Service pack ( SP) 2.
3. If 1 & 2 point is oke...I think u must buy PCI to USB card, because your USb Port maybe broken.

Just to add to the others.... depending one the machine, Most PC's a shipped with a drivers CD, that has drivers specifically for the chipset on the motherboard.
In most cases you probadly don't need them, but this may be the case...The chipset helps all internal devices to the botherboard talk..

If you know your motherboard maker, you can web over to their site and download some motherboard drivers...

Anywho,,hope this helps

You need to check both the host controllers and the root hubs. Both are reguired for the ports to function.
