This is certainly a hotly debated topic. I have had college and high school classes where the abortion debate was brought up time and time again. From my experience, people tend to be very passionate one way or the other-so my advice, in order to prevent hurt feelings and total chaos, try to keep an open mind and view it as a discussion and not a debate. This way you and your fellow classmates will be able to express your opinions and learn more about the opposite side, therefore giving yourselves more information on which to base your own decision. I think this is one of those topics that, for any number of reasons, is deeply personal and therefore completely unreasonable to ask a group of people, whether it be a classroom or a country, to come to a consensus one way or the other. And to answer your question, I personally lie someone in the middle. My morals tell me it's completely and totally unacceptable, that every life is a miracle and that there is a reason and a purpose for every person put here on earth. However, at the same time, I can't ignore the fact that there are so many children out there that suffer through horrible childhoods because their parents are completely unfit to care for them. Some grow up fine and some grow up to become career criminals. Some get tossed around between foster homes and others stay with their unfit parents and either suffer under them or inherit their behavior-or both. I can't help but wonder if some of this thinking comes from some primordial sense of "survival of the fittest". Perhaps some part of me, maybe others too, doesn't want children born to poor and/or underprivileged parents because I/we think these children will become a burden on society. But what about those who were aborted that would have been born to wealthy, prominent parents? Well, as unfair as it sounds, that seems more wrong-and for no other reason than these children would have had more resources, more opportunities to advance and contribute to society. So here I am, stuck in the middle. But I do have an open mind, and perhaps someday I will make a decision one way or another. Try to keep an open mind, and whatever you come up with, own it. Don't let anyone back you into a corner or make you feel bad for what you believe in. Best of luck to you.

About abortion. I think it is murder. I am Pro-Choice. I couldn't ever have an abortion, but I can't tell you that you MUST have this child. If a woman don't want a baby when she gets pregnant, she probably won't change her mind after carrying it for 7,8, or 9 months... depending on when she finds out. If she is the kind of person that can give it away for adoption, then I would prefer this option. The problem with that is some women's and girl's families, husbands, boyfriends, ect. would think bad about her and insist that she keep the baby. Or insist that she have an abortion. I don't know which one is worse. Probably insisting she keep the baby because if she don't want to be a mother, she will probably not be a good mother.
The whole thing is to me, how is the baby going to be treated once it gets here if she can't have an abortion?? I honestly think there would be ALOT less child abuse in this world if women could have had an abortion when they wanted one in the first place.

First of all, I doubt that there is anyone that is honestly "pro-abortion." The act itself is not a good thing. It involves killing something that would otherwise one day be a person. I consider it a kind of murder. However, I can understand the pro-CHOICE argument, even if I don't whole-heartedly approve. The point of pro-choice is that the baby is essentially a part of the woman's body until she gives birth, and since she has the right to control her on body, she should have the right to terminate the pregnancy. I think the problem with this argument is that it ignores the fact that an embryo/fetus is a human life, heart-beat, nerves or no. Abortion effectivey kills that life. The only time I would say abortion is acceptable is when the pregnancy is a threat to the health of the mother or the child was concieved in rape. Otherwise, I see no reason why you can't carry the baby to term and give it up for adoption. If you can kill it, you can deal with giving it away. I realize that giving away a baby that grew in your womb for nine months is very difficult, and I know I could never do it myself, but to kill the thing instead so you won't have to deal with giving it up? Kill it because it's easier? That's just my view. I know some people see it differently. However, I do not believe that abortion should be outlawed. Otherwise we'll have women in back alleys trying to do it themselves with a coathanger and killing themselves or going to some street doctor and getting themselves killed. Like it or not, I don't think it's going anywhere.

I am against having an abortion myself, but I don't feel like it would be right to make everyone feel the way I do.
Reasons why people may want an abortion?
1. Because they were raped.
2. Because they were impregnated by someone in their family.
3. Because they have a medical condition where a pregnancy might put their own life in jeopardy.
4. Because they have factual information from a qualified OBGYN that there is a high possibility that there is something not right with the way the fetus is forming.
5. Because they are still in high school and they made a mistake and they need a second chance.
6. Because they are in a rigorous college program which would be severely interrupted if they had to take time out to have and raise a child.
7. Because a parent is insisting that they have one.
8. Because they don't want a baby, but giving it up for adoption isn't something they could do either.
9. Because the father wants them to have one.
10. Because they were on birth control but it failed them.
11. Because they were taking medications at the time of conception that would most likely interfere with normal development of a fetus.
12. Because they view abortion as a birth control method.
13. Because it would put a damper on their career.
14. Because they cheated on their spouse or partner and don't want to be caught.
I'm not saying I agree or disagree with the above, but there's a list of reasons someone might choose abortion over raising a child or giving it up for adoption.

For me... i would not ever have an abortion. I feel there are way to many birth controls out to prevent pregnancy so there should be no reason a person should get preg if they were being responsible in the first place. If a woman happends to get pregnant while on birth control or even not on it and knows they do not want the baby, there are plenty of people in the world who would LOVE to have it. I would not down someone if they made the choice to abort their child, they have the choice. I feel everyone needs to know the truth about what they are doing if they happen to come across the thought of abortion. they need to be aware of everything and not go into a decision like that being totally ignorant. All n all, no matter what it looks like and how far u are, it is a baby. I couldnt imagine yanking the arms off my child and the legs and the body, and smashing the head and treating that like nothing. thats exactly what they do when the baby has developed even a lil bit. I think every woman who goes for an abortion should get a finger ripped off with no meds to keep the pain away while its being done. thats what the poor child goes through except his\her whole body is ripped to pieces and sucked or pulled out. nasty!!! Poor baby.

tough call. I can see the arguement that it's murder to a certain degree but then again in some cases there is a benefit in making abortion legal that affects more than just the woman and child.
I believe it was in the book 'Freakonomics' by Steven Levitt & Stephen Dubner where it was pointed out that back when the right to have an abortion was allowed in the supreme court the overall effect of that decision - way down the line - say 15 years later was a significant drop in crime in general - sorry can't remember all the specifics - the idea was that by allowing abortions - those who we're typically not able to properly care for the children weren't having them so they didn't grow up under the conditions that typically produce criminals. this is of course a very brief description of the idea but i'm sure you get the point.

I am prochoice. No one is "pro abortion", not even those of us that feel it should be kept safe and legal. Life would be better if we could prevent the unwanted pregnancies. If that happens, abortion ceases to be an issue.
I think the emphasis should be on preventing unwanted pregnancy in the first place, instead of of what to do once you get that way. Prevention and education instead of dealing with the consequesnces.
Good sex education would be a start.
There are going to be some unwanted pregnancies for different reasons. Birth control fails, women get raped, molested, kids and teens have sex without knowing all the consequences, or thinking they can't get pregant. If those issues were addressed, then unwanted pregnancies would NOT be happening in the numbers that they do today.
It seems that preventing unwanted pregnancies would be something that we could all, or at least almost all of us could agree would be a good thing, regardless of our political leanings.

If one is completely pro choice then they are pro partial birth abortion which is murdering babies!
Intact D&X, or partial birth abortion first involves administration of medications to cause the cervix to dilate, usually over the course of several days. Next, the physician rotates the fetus to a footling breech position. The body of the fetus is then drawn out of the uterus feet first, until only the head remains inside the uterus. Then, the physician uses an instrument to puncture the base of the skull, which collapses the fetal head. Typically, the contents of the fetal head are then partially suctioned out, which results in the death of the fetus and reduces the size of the fetal head enough to allow it to pass through the cervix. The dead and otherwise intact fetus is then removed from the woman's body.
This procedure is performed on full term babies as well!

I have answered this question before (from a different ask er, of course). I am a mother of two and I have given a baby up for adoption. So, I have had three healthy children and done what I think is best for all of them. In saying that, I am VERY pro-choice. I think a woman has a right to make this decision for herself. If she thinks that is what is right for her, then she should do it. A woman should not feel pressured by society to do to her body what she does not want done to her body. If my daughter were to come to me with an unplanned pregnancy, unsure of what she should do, I would educate her on all her options (whether it be keeping the baby, adoption, or abortion), and then I would support whatever decision SHE makes. What people in society should keep in mind is that when a woman makes this decision, she is making it about her OWN body. It's not my body or your body, or any one else's. It's hers and she has the right to do whatever she wants with her body.

In this day in age, there are too many things out there to prevent pregnancy (this is why I do not agree with abstinance only contraception). In my opinion a woman gets pregnant because she wants to (keep in mind that this is not the case when sexual violence is the issue). In my opinion, abortion should only be legal if the baby might be born with defects which would make it impossible for a normal life, if the pregnancy is risking the life of the mother, or if it is because some kind of sexual violence occured and a pregnancy was the result.
