1. There's no operation to be done inside the parentheses, they're just there to distinguish the negative sign in front of the number from a subtraction operation. The only operation is subtracting -9 from -2.
Now subtracting a negative number is the same as adding a positive number, so (-2) - (-9) = (-2) + 9 = 7.

2. Let's look at the profit for each day, counting a loss as a negative profit:
-9
-20
+19
-12

If you add these you should get -22. Since the total profit was negative this represents a loss of $22.

You can also choose to look at the loss for each day, counting a profit as a negative loss. Then you will get daily figures of 9, 20, -19 and 12 for a total of 22, representing a total loss of $22 as before.

It may also be simpler to add all the losses together and add all the profits together first. In this case the total losses are 9 + 20 + 12 = $41 and the total profit is $19. You can then subtract the smaller from the larger to find the net remaining, which of course is again a $22 loss.

two positives or two negatives = positive
one positive, one negative = negative
1)
(-2) - (-9)
= -2 + 9
= 7

2) For 2, you would add the $ values. A loss is negative and a profit is positive
MON: -9
TUES: -20
WED: +19
THUR: -12

(-9) + (-20) + (+19) + (-12)
= - 9 - 20 + 19 - 12
= -22, A loss of $22

1: -2 - (-9) = -2 + 9 (-- = +) so thats a) 7
2: loss = -
profit = +
so: -9 -20 +19 -12= -31 + 19 = -12

so a loss of 12$

Both very easy
1st one ignore the parenthesis, they're just there to show that you have 2 negative numbers. So you have negative two minus negative nine, or negative two plus nine.

2nd one negative nine, plus negative twenty, plus nineteen, plus negative twelve. (clue: it's a loss)
