I came from a country of which giving silver spoon as gift for newborn babies is not a custom (also the usage of the silver teether for baby, etc). I have a 6 mo baby now (still breast fed her). I have received a silver spoon as a gift for my baby daughter, and started using it to feed my baby for the past few days. Only then, I browsed at Yahoo! Answers - and found that there is an open question about the danger of using the silver spoon for baby, without elaborating what is the danger that is lurking. What I want to know is, what is exactly the danger? What harm could it be for the baby in the longer run? I am scared to continue using the spoon, afraid that I would endanger my baby's health.. Could you please give me some information please? Thank you!

The only thing I've ever been aware of is that once babies gums get sensitive as teeth are about to come in (could be as early as four months) the metal spoon could hurt their gums. Some babies refuse to use a metal spoon when they're teething anyway

Maybe, too, the chance that the baby could do something like use the spoon himself and maybe hit his throat with the hard spoon would be an issue. As you know, baby spoons are now made with either a soft coating or else out of plastic. They usually have short or curved handles as well - so maybe the hard, stick-like, handle could be an issue if the baby starts to use the spoon himself.

I recently learned of an old Irish tradition where family members (and maybe close friends) take turns tapping a silver spoon on the baby's lower gums. The first one to get a "ping" sound as opposed to a dull sound, meaning the spoon connected with a tooth, has to buy the baby its first pair of walking shoes.

There is no such danger. That person was either trying to cause trouble or is misinformed. People have been using silver spoons to feed babies for hundreds of years.

Use it. It's a lot safer than plastic (chemical wise). It won't hurt your baby's gums etc. My Nanna gave me two silver baby spoons that she used for her 3 children (aged between 46 and 60) and I happily used them for my son.

Do some research yourself on yahoo search and then you can make your own decision. I used a silver spoon with my kids and see no side effects.

Medical Applications

While silver's importance as a bactericide has been documented only since the late 1800s, its use in purification has been known throughout the ages. Early records indicate that the Phoenicians, for example, used silver vessels to keep water, wine and vinegar pure during their long voyages. In America, pioneers moving west put silver and copper coins in their water barrels to keep it clean.

In fact, "born with a silver spoon in his mouth" is also a reference to health as well as wealth. In the early 18th century, babies who were fed with silver spoons were healthier than those fed with spoons made from other metals, and silver pacifiers found wide use in America because of their beneficial health effects.

Today silver is used in many health-care products. Specifically silver sulfadiazine is used by every hospital in North America to prevent bacterial infections in burn victims and allow the body to restore naturally the burnt tissue. It is used worldwide under the trade name "Silvadiene." Increasingly, wound dressings and other wound care products incorporate a layer of fabric containing silver for prevention of secondary infections. Surgical gowns and draperies also include silver to prevent microbial transmission. Other medical products containing silver are catheters and stethoscope diaphragms.

In a world that is showing increasing concern about the spread of diseases silver is being increasingly tapped for its biocidal properties. Research is ongoing on the use of silver and its compounds for therapeutic uses and on its potential use as a disinfectant in hospitals and other medical facilities. Already, climate control system components and ductwork using a silver containing coating are in place to prevent the transmission of bacteria that cause Legionnaires disease. The successful preparation of nano-sized silver particles offers additional capabilities in the fight against pathogenic organisms and research programs are under way to exploit these features.
