Yes it is true and it has a few reasons why... there is a chemical reaction with a few of the ingredients in the diet coke such as aspartame and the other is the so called nucleation reaction because of the very pitted surface of the mento's think of a pot of boiling water all the bubbles coming up are because of microscopic pits on the surface which lets gas bind to it.

first, it's DIET cola. Second, it's basic surface tension. You drop mentos into the soda and all the nooks and crannies in the mentos get the carbonation and release it, causing it to "shoot" up. Because of all the surface space because of the nooks and crannies there is a lot more surface as opposed to something that is very smooth, like say an M&M.

There are several videos on YouTube. Also a demonstration on David Letterman's show... it might be on one of the YouTube's.
I don't suggest drinking diet coke and eating Mentos. Just the video alone... you might have a blow out somewhere.
