First of all, you can't mix AMD and Intel processors. If you have an Intel Processor now, you can't switch to an AMD without switching to an AMD-based motherboard.
Since you have a P4 at 1.8GHZ, most experts wouldn't recommend upgrading a processor that old, since any processor you'd get that would fit your current motherboard wouldn't be much of an improvement. A better upgrade for your money is memory (RAM). Upgrade to 512MB, or better, 1GB. You'll see much more of a performance increase with this upgrade.
If you don't want to do that, if your memory is already maxed out, you'll want to look at getting a new computer.

The easiest thing to do woul dbe take it to a reputable dealer in your area, however I will tell you what I do know.
If it is in fact a Pentium 4 1.8, then there is a Socket 423 and 478 version. No, you will not be able to put an AMD processor on that board.
I do not know which yours is. If it is a 423, you will liekly find it most difficult to find a new processor, but check Ebay.
If it is a 478 you may still find something in a store, but it's always good to take our tower with you, some stores will even install CPU's free with purchase.
A Couple other notes is with those earlier P4's, there were different bus speeds that your motherboard may or may not support, also they used different types of RAM, Rambus, PC 133 and DDR. If it is Rambus you may have difficulty aquiring memory if you are looking to upgrade. The other kinds while outdated, are probably still available new, if not, definately available on Ebay.

All that which you mentioned does matter
Motherboards are made with certain sockets and the processor would need to be of the same kind
Since AMD and Intel are direct competitors there may be some quirks that would make them unstable with each other
No your motherboard would need to support a 64bit processor
For the self learner It may be best to 1st find out what type of motherboard you have
go to their website and find out as much as you can about what it does support and then go from there.

an i3 will completely injury a Pentium ... you cant merely verify out ghz there's a lot greater to it then that... you apart from mght could desire to evaluate buss/center ratio's, numbers of cores and if its hyper threaded, the cpu's cache, DMI speed (interior the case of i3's) .... in short an i3 will smoke a Pentium facet be conscious: As its been mentioned you want a GPU, and integrated chip on the motherboard probably isn't gonna decrease it for MW2

They just won't fit. AMD and Intel make their motherboard interface for not being compatible with each other. Even different sockets for the same brand won't work together. I always buy a processor and a motherboard together.
For a list of sockets please see:
