i work as a secretary for a construction site, my boss as of recently (w/o my permission) has done a background check, accused me of stealing (i didn't) and says he has me on tape, accused me and my boyfriend of stealing from his home (i clean as a side job..we didn't) and has threatened me several times heh, but for some reason hasnt tried firing me. so i want to quit.. i cant take it any more, its stressful with all these accusations and the distance is also taxing. Do i give a notice? whats the shortest and longest, can he take legal action and how can i protect myself from these false allegations?! can i take legal action for the background check? what do i do? plain and simple should i just quit and not say anything and ask him to mail me a check or what?! (i don't want to deal with this guy anymore)

Standard is two weeks, I would give him a week. It is illegal in a lot of states to run a background check without written permission from the employee. A lot of areas have places where you can call a lawyer and ask them questions for free. I would do that to see if there is any thing you can legally do. Tell him to mail your check and make sure it has delivery confirmation on it so you can track you check. That way he can't "lose" your last check.

Dude I was in the same exact position as you 2 months ago, worked in an office. Office manager was a real BI*CH etc.. Heres my story, listen up. The day I walked in to give my 2 week notice, I heard that I was going to be fired in a couple of days. So Instead of quiting, I did a half *** job the rest of my time there, real relaxed... etc..And also since they fired me, I applied for un-employment. For me it was benificial, because I needed to bein my Entrepreneurship anyway (I want to be an entrepreneur.) In your case, maybe i'd just ride it out, You've already got a job lined up, with nothing to lose. I'd probably show up to work because I can't have any gaps in my income. And if that manager wants to be a BI*CH than just GO OUT WITH A BANG!! haha make a huge scene and storm out of there. Regardless, I suggust you read this book "Rich dad, Poor dad" by Robert T. Kiyosaki It is a book on money, and the way it works. It really showed me that I was living in the rat race, you are too. You & I are slaves to money, we live pay check, to pay check. And nothing will change if we change nothing. I have decided to take a risk and give it a try, I rounded up a bunch of Ideas, and am now executing them. I am seriously making progress. I've got 12 vending machines that currently generate money for me, I am new at it so I don't really know what to expect. But so far its really close to what I was making at work. And that is nothing! i've got tons of other ideas that I have lined up for execution. And this vending thing takes up none of my time, maybe 1 hour a month. The idea is to plant little money tree's and water the everyday. The idea being the seed, the execution being the watering. The tree being the money generating process. Read the book man, it cost 8 bucks and they sell it everywhere. I bought mine at a Fedex/Kinkos store. Good luck, go out with a bang dude!

First of all, I would tell him that I want to see a copy of this tape he made of you stealing. More than likely, he won't show it. Before you quit, I would call an attorney just to see what he thinks about all of this. There may be something you can do. If not, then tell your boss that you are giving him a two weeks notice. Also, it's best if you give him a letter of resignation. Good Luck!

You should give two weeks notice. If he really thought you had done those things, he would report them to police. No, you cannot take action for the background check.

I would give a week in your case. Normally the standard is two weeks if I'm not mistaken but you're in a crazy situation. If you give a week and he says, you're gone before that, then he isn't firing you because you've already gave notice of your intention to leave within a week. Put in in writing if you can and make a copy for yourself. Good luck.

If your boss is accusing you of something you didn't do, call out sick, then after you get your check you quit. You have to resign in writing, it will just hurt you emotionally if you stay further.
