where does the term, "cross your fingers and hope to die" come from?

Not sure, but the phrase is actually cross your heart and hope to die...

It is believed to have started by Catholic school children due to its similarity with making the Holy Cross

Probably children whose parents were in religion came up with that at school, thinking that if one would say "hope to die" they would not lie.
