subtract 3x from each side to get:
2x+12=-8
subtract 12 from both sides:
2x=-20
divide both sides by two (or times by a half)
x=-10

This is how you do this
5x+12=3x-8
3x 3x
(There are many ways to this, but I think this way is the best. First you subtract 3x from both sides. Minus 3x from 5x and 3x from 3x resulting in a zero.)

2x+12=-8
-12 -12
(Subtract 12 from negative 8 and from 12, which the 12 will become a zero.)

2x=-20
x=-10
(Divide both sides by 2 and get -10. Remember, negative divided by a positive is a negative. Not sure if the answer isn't correct, check it.)

5(-10)+12=3(-10)-8
-50+12=-30-8
-38=-38
(First times five and negative 10 and 3 and negative 3, then add remembering the rule for adding integers. BE CAREFUL OF THE INTEGER SIGN!!!!)

5x+12=3x-8

you need to get x alone so....combine like terms and bring the 3x to the other side by subtracting (since its positive)
5x minus 3x equals 2x so now the new equation is..
2x+12= -8

Once again, x needs to be alone so combine like terms again. Bring the 12 to the other side by subtracting (because its positive)
-8 minus 12 equals -20 so now the equation is....
2x= -20

but its not done yet because there is still a 2 in front of the x. Since 2x can also be written as 2 times x...its multiplication. The 2 needs to be brought to the other side and the opposite of multiplication is division. So divide -20 by 2. Which leaves you with....
x=-10

tada! x is finally alone and the answer is negative 10.

to show the work it would look like this....
5x + 12 = 3x - 8
-3x
2x + 12 = -8
...............-12
2x = - 20
.........../2
x = -10

what you need to do first with these types of questions is isolate the variable. Get the numbers with the x's all on one side either by adding or subtractions. What you do to one side of the equal side you MUST do to the other side. So in this example you would subtract 12 from side giving you 5x + 12-12=3x-8-12, simplified 5x =3x-20. Now subract 3x from each side 5x -3x= -20, simplified would be 2x= -20, You can subract/add either one first it doesn't matter, just do it to both sides. Answer is x= -10

Get all the 'x's on one side by subtacting 3x from both sides
5x + 12 - 3x = 3x -8 -3x
2x + 12 = -8
then subtract 12 from each side to leave th 'x's on their own
2x + 12 - 12 = -8 -12
2x = -20
divide both sides by 2 to get a single x
2x/2 = -20/2
x=-10
Check result by substituting -10 for x
(5*-10) + 12 = (3*-10) -8
-50 + 12 = -30 - 8
-38= -38

You can do this problem in steps.

First, look at the original formula and realize, there are parts with X in it, and another with just number. They are called "terms." Your first steps are to group the terms.

Original formula is:
5x + 12 = 3x - 8

You take it to:
5x - 3x = -8 -12

Remember, when you take terms ACROSS the equal sign, you change the sign. + becomes - and - becomes +.

Then simplify the terms by computing them.
5x - 3x = 2x
-8 -12 = -20
Therefore:
2x = -20

Now, if 2x = -20, what is X?
You can think of this as dividing both side by 2 and get:
x = -10 or
You can think of this as x = -20/2
x = -10

You end up with the same result either way.

The last thing to do is to plug in -10 where x is, and make sure the equation balances out.

Try it out.

first you maave to get like tems on the same sides of the equal sign

5x +12 = 3x -8
subract 3x from the right side, to balance this you must then subtract 3x from the left side

2x +12 = -8
subtract 12 from the left side, to balance we subtract 12 from the right side, remember that the eight is negative

2x= -20
divide both sides by 2 to get the x by itself
on the left side the 2's cancel each other out leaving just the x
on the right side -20 divided by 2 = -10

final answer : x = -10

(5x -3x)= - 8 -12
2x = -20
x= -10

when you move one item to another side of the equation, you have to add a - . To test if the answer is write, plub in the answer to the orignal formula:

5 * (-10) +12 = -38
3* (-10) -8 = -38

imagine it as two problems; (5x=12)(3x-8)- combine all the numbers with similiar variables5x*3x=15x ; then combine the others, 12-8=4; then take 4*15=60x and 12-8=4; then your answer is 60x*4- and that's the best I can remember how to do.

Check

5x + 12 = 3x - 8
5x - 3x = -8 -12
2x = -20
x = -20/ +2
x = -10
