After traveling from one end of the country to the other, I found that South Dakota was the most surprising (it's a very cool place). Besides Mt. Rushmore you can see:
CHIEF CRAZY HORSE MONUMENT (an entire mountain being carved in the "round") of Chief Crazy Horse sitting astride his horse;
THE CORN PALACE -- an entertainment arena that has its exterior re-done every year, with mosaic pictures (of scenery or portraits of people performing there during the year), made entirely out of corn. It looks like a mosque. Amazing!
The BADLANDS and CUSTER STATE PARK (where the buffalo roam);
The BLACK HILLS -- many, many caves (Jewel Cave, Wind Cave, etc.) some that have waterfalls inside them;
RAPID CITY -- with DINOSAUR PARK on a hill overlooking the city, the JOURNEY MUSEUM (From Dinosaurs to Deadwood);
Historic WALL DRUG (Wall, S.D.);
The town of DEADWOOD (home of Boot Hill, the cemetery which is the final resting of many old time outlaws and lawmen including Wild Bill Hickock and Calamity Jane), site of many historic saloons, panning for gold;
REPTILE GARDENS;
SIOUX FALLS -- WASHINGTON PAVILLION OF ARTS & SCIENCES has 80 hands-on science exhibits, including full size replica of the Tyrannosaurus Rex found in western South Dakota;
BIG THUNDER GOLD MINE -- panning for gold (Keystone, S.D.).
There are many more things to see. Log onto TravelSD.com
(I'm not from South Dakota, but I must admit I was impressed!)
Enjoy your trip if you travel there !

Yes! South Dakota is beautiful, especially if you enjoy land that has not been completely obliterated by development. The Black Hills of South Dakota are home to hundreds of unique attractions including: Crazy Horse Monument, Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave Monument, historic Deadwood, historic 1880 Train, Sturgis (home of the bike rally), and many state parks and recreation areas. Just east of the Black Hills is Badlands National Park, a landscape similar to the moon and unseen anywhere else in the US. Central South Dakota has few residents, but there are miles of endless rolling prairie hills so the view is breathtaking, especially around the Missouri River bluffs. Don't miss world famous Wall Drug in tiny Wall, SD or Al's Oasis Truck Stop in Oacoma, SD. Eastern South Dakota is more agricultural, but is also home to some of the cleanest and friendliest cities in the country, including Sioux Falls and Mitchell. Visit www.travelsd.com for more ideas.

Not really. My husband and I drove from Charlotte, NC to Seattle, WA, with South Dakota being a stop. It was boring and almost eerie. Good luck!
