The biggest picture I've ever seen is 10 MB, which means you could put 4,000 on 40 GB. Most pictures I've seen are just under a MB, which means you could put over 50,000 pictures. It all depends on the size of your pictures. If you fill up 40 GB with pictures, that's a lot of freaking pictures. If all else fails, burn them to DVD (4.7 GB) or CD (.7 GB).

40 GB is not enough. I use windows XP (sp3) and I have an 80 GB hard drive. The total size of my c: drive is 14.5 GB. Now, I have only 4.35 GB free space in my c: drive. I only install my motherboard drivers (integrated video driver, HD audio driver) and some essential software like MS Office, Adobe Photoshop, AutoCAD, Kaspersky internet security etc. Windows XP needs only 8GB free space. But, I think a hard drive with minimum 120 GB free space is enough for Windows XP.

Assuming an average size per photo of 2 MB, 40 GB would be enough space to store 20,000 pictures. Do you have more than 20K pictures? If so, then you need more storage space.

don't know, depends on what you use your computer for. i use mine for video work. my computer came with a 200gig hard drive, and with video music an photos i've used up all but 20 gigs, so i bought an external hard drive with 320 gigs so i can archive all of my movies, leaving my systems hd open for other stuff. so for you, you should be fine for a while if all you're doing is pictures.

yes for now

If you find that you are running out of space you should organize your photos really well ( by date, event, whatever makes sense to you) and transfer them to a CD-ROM
2 full CDs will free up over 1GB of harddrive space

For a image size of 1280x1024 pixels, the file size is approx 200KB. So, in 40GB you can store about 200,000 pictures.
