And why. Mine is "The Only Living Boy in New York". For one, it described my life perfectly when I was in my teens and twenties and, yes, I'm a female. I cried every time I heard it between the ages of 16 and 18. Then, I only cried every other time. :) It is the most beautiful song in the world. I love that while it is for Paul a letter to Art it can also be interpreted in other ways (at least for me!) The lyrics are beyond anything I could give justice to in words, and that music! So lovely.
Thanks!

Joey - You made me laugh. Had to give you a thumbs-up:-)
Sgt. Pepper - LOVE your album. I have never heard the song called "Bridge Under Water" but that cracked me up too. I knew what you meant. :-) Kudos.

All who are writing with their stories - thank you. It's so much more interesting with a background. Cheers!

Abridoho- I know what you mean about "Kathy's Song" - such beautiful lyrics! - and I share the exact same experience:-)
Chris C.- Couldn't agree with you more. Such a terrific album. My favorite as well. "The Boxer" is the song that got me into S&G in the first place. It was another one that made me feel understood growing up - so powerful. I cried listening to that nearly as much. What a great song!
Barbara- I am so sorry for your loss. That was a beautiful response. Thank you.

I loved all their music. I have a special place in my heart for "Bridge Over Troubled Water." I knew a man once who I always associated with this song. "When you need a friend,
I'm sailing right behind"....he was my friend. I remember once, MANY years ago, I was working on a playground. My friend had come by to say hello. My supervisor showed up and was speaking rather harsh to me about some matter. As he spoke , he looked at the wonderful person next to me and said, "Who are YOU?" My special someone stood next to me so that his shoulder was right behind my shoulder. He looked that supervisor right in the eye and said, "I'm her friend. She is going to lunch now." Very seldom in my life have I felt the way I did at that moment. I'll always remember this man and I will always be thankful he was in my life.
"I will comfort you. I'll take your part".....he did.
I haven't had contact with him for more than 30 years. I may call him today.

"Only Living Boy" is a great song, but then so is the entire "Bridge Over Troubled Water" album. Both Simon and Garfunkle have done great work before and since, but I think that album is the best they ever made, either together or separately.
Therefore, I have to say my favorite S&G song is from the same album: "The Boxer". I think it's mainly because the protagonist in the song keeps on going ("the fighter still remains") despite his difficult and lonely life. The climax of the song, "...and he carries the reminders of every glove that laid him down or cut him til he cried out in his anger and his pain..." always brings out strong emotion from me, and leads into that calming but determined series of, I believe it's either 9 or 13 reprises, "...lie, lie lie..."
In fact, pretty much every song on the album is about sadness and lonliness. Even the upbeat "Cecelia", "Baby Driver" and "Bye, Bye Love".
That album was the first that I ever learned all the words to.

Homeward Bound always brings back good memories for me.
I was travelling extensively around the time it was popular (mid 60s).
Everywhere I went it seemed that song was on the redio.
I figured they were telling me something, it was time to come home and make peace with the parents.

I'm sittin' in the railway station
Got a ticket for my destination
On a tour of one night stands
My suitcase and guitar in hand
And every stop is neatly planned
For a poet and a one man band

The Boxer was another that seem to speak to me.
And yes, The Only Living Boy in NY is a great song too.
It seems we all all have songs that evoke that feeling of sweet nostalgia.

Bridge Over Troubled Water
This is the first song I learned by heart. At the time my parents marriage was in it's death throes,I was very young and my oldest sister was my bridge. She has since passed away and the song always brings back to me the love and support she gave
throughout her life.
They do have many, many awesome songs.

They had so many great songs....difficult to choose....if you force me at gun point I'll probably go Kodachrome with Sounds of Silence a close second. I love their harmonizing....I love the lyrics.....they were incredible.......

A great question might be what's the best cover of a Simon and Garfunkle song?

I'd have to go with The Bangles take on Hazy Shade of Winter

My choices would be 'Sounds of Silence', 'Scarborough Fair', and 'Bridge Over Troubled Water'.
Those were the days, when both music and lyrics complemented each other - instead of each trying to silence the other !

The Sounds Of Silence... because it brings me back to a period in time when life was perfect, I had lost no friends/loved ones to cancer, I was in the throe of my first love, all the planets were in alignment... and there was simon & garfunkle to be the icing on the cake.
