I have to find the distance between (-3,-2) and (1,4)

The distance between two points is given by
d = √((x2-x1)^2 + (y2-y1)^2)
= √((1 - (-3))^2 + (4 - (-2))^2)
= √(4^2 + 6^2)
= √(16 + 36)
= √52
= √(4.13)
= 2√13.

Think of this as a right triangle. The third point would be (1,-2). Draw it, and this will make sense. Now just use the Pythagorean Theorom. r^2 = x^2 + y^2. The horizontal leg is four units long, and the vertical leg is six units long. The hypotenuse (distance between the points) is therefore the square root of 16 + 36, or the square root of 52.

find the resulting vector by subtracting one point from another:

(1,4) - (-3,-2) = <4,6>

then find the length of the vector:
d = square root (4^2 + 6^2)
= squareroot(52)
= 2 * squareroot (13)
~= 7.211
