While I make typing mistakes and do not always correct them, some askers spell so poorly no one is exactly sure what they are asking. Those are the only ones with whom I get frustrated. However, I never answer with just spelling criticism; I just am unable to try to answer the question.

I think you are right. People who ask questions and those who answer them, should use the spell-check facility provided by YA, so that what is read by others isn't confusing. However, as no one is perfect all the time, spelling mistake do occur, even with the best of effort!
As long as such errors are few and understandable, the 'spell checkers', as you call them, should not bother to point them out, just to show that they are good in their correction techniques.
What really is appalling is that people don't use the spell-check facility at all, and many questions cannot be understood if spelling errors abound in them.
How about a grammar check, even if a 100% correct spelling is seen in a question or answer?

Yahoo Answers is not trying to 'put people down' by having a spell checker service. When asking and answering questions, it's important to have decent spelling so that other people are not confused. It's a lot easier to answer questions that are properly written. Have you tried to answer questions that have such bad spelling you can hardly understand them? Also, some people are not very good at spelling, but showing this publicly (or even on the Net) can be a bit embarrasing. The Spell Checker service is a decent way to check for any errors.
Simply put, if you don't like it, don't use it.
However, if you don't think having a Spell Checker is worthwhile, I suggest you go and read something on fanfiction.net or fictionpress.com . The amount of stories that are written poorly with mispelled words, bad grammar, slang and shorthand is appalling. Having that kind of material there, while some people are looking for quality work, is quite tiresome, and putting up with common errors like "beleive", "beggining", "tommorow", and "expect/except" is why such things HAVE a spell checker. The website does have one, but whether people use it or not is completely up to them. So, feel free not to use it, but you don't have to complain - it's a worthwhile tool. Otherwise, it would not have been invented.

Of course 'people' care. How do You think it feels to discover that Your answer to a question is littered with spelling errors, only to come to the sudden realization that You are not a complete, illiterate but rather that the "ABC Check Spelling" function only works in "Americanized English" and not actual English?
You have no idea how annoying it can be. Trust Me on this!

I don't think you are referring to the "spell-check" device on Answers. I think you mean the people who criticise the spelling of
some askers.
(By the way, that's how the English spell criticise.)
I prefer to be corrected if I misspell a word, and spell it correctly next time.
If you don't care, don't worry, but some of us DO care!
