Chickens don't but I don't know if they count as birds. Do normal birds lay unfertilized eggs unless they mate? Help!

Birds can lay eggs whether the eggs have been fertilized or not. But an unfertilized egg will not develop into a chick, no matter what kind of bird it is. A chicken is a bird like any other. Check the website listed below for more information.

all birds, including chickens need to mate to produce fertilized eggs that will eventually hatch and produce a chick. However, all birds can lay eggs without mating, they would just be eggs without embryos in them and would never produce chicks. ALL life comes from an egg and sperm no matter what the animal is!

Chickens lay eggs whether they have mated or not but only fertilized eggs will develop into chicks. And yes chickens are very definitely birds.

However certain species that normally reproduce sexually (i. e. they have to mate to produce offspring) will occasionally reproduce without mating. The name for this process is parthenogenesis. It can occur in several types of plants, invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and even a few species of birds.

Parthenogenesis tends to occur in situations where females do not have access to males for mating. It can be thought of as a species survival mechanism.

Chickens don't need to mate to lay eggs but the eggs won't hatch unless they are fertilised. All female birds can lay unfertilised eggs and they often do in captivity but it is unlikely in the wild.
