The song was written on a bet. Its point was to prove that nobody pays attention to the lyrics, that it's all about sound and instrumentation and rhythm and chords and stuff. They thought they could write a song with nonsense lyrics that was good in all the other areas, and have a hit. So they tested the theory by deliberately writing lyrics that made no sense whatsoever. It was a hit, but then people have been analyzing the lyrics to death ever since, so I'd say they do pay attention.
However, I agree with the comic who said, "Look. You're in a desert. You've got nothing else to do. NAME THE FREAKIN' HORSE!"
