My ipod came fully charged. Are you sure it isn't locked? If it isn't charged yet, wait before you do download music on it. Read your manual. I'm sure it will tell you how long to charge it. Or go to apple.com

If it doesn't even try to boot up when you push the center button (you should see the Apple logo in B&W on every model except the Shuffle), there are only two possibilities. Either you didn't slide the Hold button to the unlocked position (I don't have a Nano, but on an iPod Video, it's locked if it shows orange on one end), or the battery has reached a state of deep discharge. Lithium-Ion batteries react badly to being recharged if they have been discharged too far. Don't worry, they also include monitoring devices that prevent them from being recharged if they've been discharged too far (you can plug them in and they just won't take a charge). If this is the case, return it under warranty and get a replacement.

Anyways, as long as it is connected to your computer, it will be charging off of the USB cable, which is also how you sync music to it. So yes, you can fill it up with music while it's charging from your computer (just remember not to turn off the computer until it's fully charged, which would be a benefit of buying a separate AC adapter).

Now as for charging it completely or partially, all new rechargable batteries take a bit of conditioning to get them running at their max capacity, which means fully charging it and fully discharging it a few times. However, the only batteries that need to be fully charged and discharged on a regular basis are Ni-Cads, which will develop a memory effect if only partially discharged or charged. Li-Ion can be topped off with no negative effects.

Mine usually takes about 4 -5 hours but its a 30gb. It will tell you when it's done!

You need to charge them when you first buy it. You can play it will it's charging, but NOT when its syncing music from iTunes. So if you still want to listen while its charging, best to charge off the adapter instead of the computer. Unfortunately adapters don't come standard which sucks, but you can buy one if you really see the need.

DON'T unplug it unless its fully charged, no matter what people say. And don't charge it unless it's completely flat. Just like a mobile, yes.

Have fun.

If you read the directions, it tells you to fully charge your iPod before doing anything with it.
