The Maya ball game was named Pitz, and the action of play was Ti Pitziil in Classic Maya. Its association with mythology were not only central to religious Maya belief. It was the first sport in the History of the Humanity, dating at least from circa 2500 BC, The oldest court accurately dated have been found in Nakbe, Petén, Guatemala, dating from 500 BC.

Young Maya nobles played a sacred ball game on specially constructed courts. Without using their hands, players tried to knock a rubber ball through one of the vertical stone rings built into the walls of the court. On special occasions players who lost the game would be sacrificed to the gods.
