If you mix 1 gallon of water with 1 gallon of ethanol you do NOT get 2 gallons of mixed fluid. You get something closer to 1.75 gallons. So, sometimes 1 + 1 is 1.75.
The reason for this is that the molecule of the water and alcohol fit so well together that they can move closer to each other than they can with their own type of molecules..
