asking for $25 bucks a year to keep that name of my web site. Is this normal? DO I have to pay a company to reserve this name. I paid $85 toget the name and have it set up a few years ago. I just want to make sure that I am not getting scammed.

no that is not normal.....there is a fee that you pay to a "registrar" like godaddy, enom, 1&1, etc. You should already have your name with one and that is the only one that you need to pay. The mail that you got is just sales ads to get you to switch over to another registrar. All you have to do is pay a yearly renewal fee or you can even pay it in like 5 years in advance to who ever it is you registered your name to your site. Yearly fees are usually no more than $9 (godaddy)... there are ofcourse some that charge alot more....godaddy works just fine for me

When you set up the site, you licensed the name for a specific period. You normally do this through a company (that may go through another company and so on) that has the right to reserve numbered locations and give them names (your name) by registering them. The company contacting you may be legit, but you don't recognise the name because it got bought and sold a couple of times. Or it may be a company that is trying to hijack your account and has a program that looks for expiring names and contacts the owners. You need to contact the company that is hosting your site and get the registration information.

If you have your own website you should who your site is hosted by and who your domain name is registered with.
Domain names are registered once a year at $8.95 per domain name per year.
If they are charging you $25 it had better be for more than a year or you are being screwed.
Do you maintain your own website?
You can register your domain name for any number of years you want but it should never be more than $8.95 per year.
It sounds like you have someone else do the work for you and unfortunately that means you are a lamb to slaughter.
I would call them and tell them you want to know the hosting package is with and that contact information and any codes connected to your website and that you want to know what the extra $16.05 charge is for as you know that renewals only cost $8.95.
As I say they have you by the short and curlies as you obviously do not maintain your own site.
You probably pay over a thousand dollars a year for someone else to do the work when it costs them less than $200.
I did the same thing for a couple of years when i owned my own business. then I learned how to build my own website which was so much better than the one that came with the business and I saved a small fortune doing it myself.
When you know nothing you are at the mercy of scavengers.
good luck.
