Cannot reformat my portable device?

Question

I am having problems with my computer not reading my mp3 player when i hook it up by usb. I tried reformatting my portable device drive on my computer but it says it is copywrite protected and wont let me do it. Does anybody know a way I can do this or get around it?

My girlfriend had a camera that did something similar, turned out the memory stick was bad. If your MP3 is old, it could be bad.
