It sounds like this person is interacting with people. I like my own company and prefer to do my own thing. This does not make me a hermit. I just prefer to be with people on the days when I am not enjoying my solitude. I could ask the same thing of social butterflies. Why do you have to be with people all the time? Do you have a disorder?

This person sounds like either an avoidant or schizoid personality (google them, lots of info out there). These two disorder are similar with a big important difference. Both live as hermits to some degree, but avoidants avoid people because they have social anxiety and fear rejection and criticism, while schizoid avoid people because they genuinely prefer solitude and simply don't care about what peple think of them. Basically, avoidant hermits really want to be socialites, while schizoid hermits just want to be left alone. As for whether this person has a "disorder" you must be careful with that label. According to most diagnostic criteria, people get labeled with a psychological disorder or mental illness if their oddness makes it difficult for them to function in life. If the person works, pays his bills, obeys the law and cooperates with people in so far as he needs to, then they need not be labeled with having a disorder because they have an adequate amount of order in their lives. So if this hermit you speak of has a job and enough money to get by, isn't a criminal or drug addict and doesn't cause conflict with people, I say let them be.

I would consider this more of a personal preference as opposed to being pathological in nature. This is not to say that the person in question does not have character flaws anymore than someone who might be looked upon as being outgoing and charismatic by nature.
But to come to the conclusion that someone is antisocial just because they prefer solitude to being around groups of people all of the time is jumping to conclusions.

Although this person could have a disorder, it is not necessarily a disorder. There could be a multitude of motivations for this behavior.

I consider myself a bit of a recluse. I have no personality disorders. Why does everything have to have a label?

Perhaps the person is just an extreme introvert or shy, or maybe they just don't like people
