The gold coast, including all of its theme parks is located in Queensland, And universal studios is actually in America.

For budget flights to melbourne from sydney, try virgin airlines, or jetstar, usually return flights will be at around $100, Which is a much better option than driving from melbourne to sydney, as It will take a good 6 to 7 hours driving.

Take 2 weeks, a week in two cities just wont give you time to explore everything, honestly, i wont bother listing things to do in sydney, because most of it has already been said in a previous comment. But, In Melbourne, try:

-The melbourne Aquarium,
-Crown Casino,
-Luna park (if you have kids, otherwise it is a waste of time)

-the werribee open range zoo ( much more fun than the melbourne zoo, its about a half hour out of melbourne)

-Sovereign hill (A great place to spend the day, about an hour out of melbourne)

-Queen victoria markets
-The IMAX and the museum( Located in the CBD and right next to each other, so both can be done in a day)

Thgat there is about 4 days worth of sight seeing right there.

Hope all that helps. :)

Wow - thats a lot to answer. I can only help on the Sydney parts.

July in Australia is classed as Winter, so the temperature will be around 18 degrees (maybe hotter occasionally). The nights can and early mornings can get a little chilly, so bring maybe a longsleeved shirt to wear for these times. Through the day it can get nice and warm.

So, one week to do both Sydney and Melbourne. I would say maybe split it 50/50 with 3 days in each (and 1 day for travelling). I havn't personally been to Melbourne, but I would say 3 days in Sydney would let you have a good stab at the tourist sites.

I would definately recommend you go to Darlingharbour, there is tons to do there (restaurants/bars/aquarium/wildlife world/fast jet boats/boat trips to see the whales/showboats etc. etc.)

Then onto Circular Quay (where you will see the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge). I would also recommend you walk across the bridge, its free and definately worth it (you could also pay to climb the bridge, but it is quite high). The Opera House has tours which are well worth it. Near to Circular Quay, is a famous restaurant called Doyles Fish Restaurant, its best to go on an evening, great views. Also, nearby to Circular Quay is the Rocks area, which has a great ghost walk, taking you through the life and death of the convicts.

Sydney also has some great museums; Powerhouse Museum, Natural History Museum (Australian Museum I think its called).

Oh, and you definately have to try to fit Taronga Zoo in too. There is a ferry from Circular Quay. Its great to be able to travel by ferry.

You could also buy a dayticket for the Explorer buses (Bondi Explorer and City Explorer). You can hop on and off both for the price of one ticket. Bondi is a definate, its really great. Again, you can catch this at Circular Quay.

For a bit of shopping, head for George Street and the Queen Victoria Buildings, a really gorgeous old Victorian shopping arcade with some lovely shops in.

Hope you have a lovely time.

If you like sport try and catch a football game in Melbourne.... especially if you can get into the MCG. 1 week isn't a lot of time and you probably will have to stick to Sydney and Melbourne. If you get a chance swing through Canberra and see our actual Nations Capitol. Including the giant golf hole we call Parliament house. Try to hit all the major tourist sites if you can, the Harbour Bridge, The Opera House, The rocks district..If you want to see the rest of the country that is worth doing to but if you only have a week here and there take it 1 city/region at a time.
