I think if people wouldn't break the law-or ban-then a ban on alcohal would be best. People would be able to hold jobs, which means they wouldn't be homeless, and there would be less crime. on a more personal to people level, smoking would be a better ban because it gives them lung disease

Neither, from the point of view of a Democracy. The Government attempted to ban alcohol; you may have heard of the Prohibition Amendment which was repealed because it did not work and was most likely unconstitutional. The public should be informed enough and intelligent enough not to smoke and not to drink to excess. Of course, the public is imperfect and will continue to abuse alcohol and tobacco, both of which possess the ability to cause severe health problems including death. Tobacco is a greater offender because of the production of secondary smoke which can endanger innocent bystanders; smoking currently is prohibited in most public places for that reason. Alcoholism, however, can make life miserable for the drinker's family, so it can hardly be said to be preferable to smoking.

Well, it has been tried in the past during prohibition. People just made their own or bootlegged. As for smoking--I don't think people would go for that.
I cannot see either having a positive impact, there would be some really angry people looking for drinks and smokes.
The alcohol ban in certain countries has not had a very positive effect on the populace, IMHO. However, if you look at countries like Holland, there seems to be a very low crime rate.

A ban on niether. Why should you tell me what I am allowed to do? I don't agree with smoking or people who drink too much, but why do most people feel like they need to control others. That's all this is . Making stupid laws so you can control others. Hey walking at night is dangerous, so let's ban that. What other freedoms would you like to take away? They have allready banned smoking in public places, that should be enough for you.
