I understand your problem. I have a BA in Psychology and have never worked in my field. The best advice I can give you is the advice that I have given myself. I got a job that is enough to pay my bills and have decided to go back to school for Nursing. I'm not suggesting that you go for Nursing, but I am suggesting that you find a career that has a high demand and will continue to have a high demand and go for that. It sucks, but that's the best way to go right now. You can always go back to food safety one day.

In the workforce of today, if your unemployed, good luck finding a starting wage you are happy with..I just had to settle for less than what I expected to make and have made in the past...
the economy is going down and uneployment is going up..take what you can, eventually the money will come and you will be paid what you think you are worth..
A full time paycheck is better than no pay check at all...You just going to have to take an offer or settle for a job that you might not necessarily want to do..
I have a friend who has a bachelors degree in business management. She just had to take a 3rd shift job at a Wendy's, but she is making 9.00 an hour and gets 2 weekends off a month. To her, it was better than being completly broke and having to collect welfare...

Job are granted to people who know people. Make volunteering part of your job search strategy. You'd be surprised how a network of people beats filling out applications.
Make a simple resume, have a phone number with voice mail. Simple things.,
