OK, now...by Free memory, I am asuming that you are talking about RAM and not Free Space on your hard drive (IT is a common mistake)
In order to find out how much free memory you have...using Windows XP, Right click on an empty area on the "Taskbar" (The bar on the bottom of your screen that has the start button on it) and select "Task Manager". Once the Task Manager window opens, click on the Tab called "Performance". Performance will show many different things, but what we want is under "Physical Memory (K)"
Under "Physical Memory (K)" , you will see Total, Available and System Cache. "Available" is what you are after.

depends on what you mean by memory.
do you mean free space on your hard drive or do you mean system memory (RAM). either way goto widgets.yahoo.com
now download and install the widget engine.
next look for the widget called sys_monitor.widget i can not remeber if the widget is part of the standard download or if you need to browse the widgets pages for system monitor. either way find that and open it. next right click on it and set your preferences.
the widget monitors your computers uptime (how long it has been on, the load placed on your CPU, physical memory (RAM) swap file (virtual ram, hard drive space allocated for use as memmory), you can monitor your wireless internet connection, all your volumes (hard drives) your lan IP usage, your network interface and finaly it monitors your external IP address the number seen by browsers and anyone else whos site you visit.
if you just want to know how much ram you have you can run dxdiag and that can tell you, you can open the control panel and click on system and that will tell you.
but if you want to monitor your systems resources in real time then get the widget! to the designer of the widget thanks you are a genius! i love that widget. only problem is that for some reason it remains partially see through. but i'm not too bothered. nothing is perfect.
i hope that helps.
good luck.

you say free memory most people come across get confused, there are 2 types of memory on a PC physical memory and hard drive space you should not get the 2 confused, computer memory is called ram, your computers hard drive space is completely different,if you want to know how much physical ram you have go to controll panel and click on the system icon it will show you what amount of physical ram you have.
