This can be very hard on the kids at times but over time they will adapt and live with it which is way better then putting them through seeing you fight and not get along with your spouse and grow up in that kind of environment.

As each child has their own personality, it depends. No one wants to see the parents they love separate. Their world seems to be crumbling around them and they can't do anything about it as they are not the decision makers. This puts a great burden on them as they worry and don't know what life has in store for them in the future.

Surely, you know that their hearts are breaking and many times they believe it is their fault that Mom and Dad don't want to be together anymore.

You need to assure them by sitting down with the children and explain the reason for the separation and definitely let them know that it has nothing to do with them and that they are loved.

The research shows that the effects are pretty negative and severe. there's less effect on a kid when their father dies than when their parents divorce!

the effects are on the ability to trust and attach. also, kids really lose because their parents are focused on so much besides the kids, includind dating. witnessing their parents date really screws kids up sexually.
