My Hamster died today. She was a great little Hammy...very gentle, very smart for a hammy. I have had four other hamsters in the last 10 years, but never one that felt so much like a family member. Yes, it sounds odd, but the little guy really worked its way in to the family. Now, I think I need to fill the void....I need a new pet..I am not sure I should get another hamster, since Its life span is only 2-3 years. I do not know if I am ready to commit to a dog yet... so Any ideas?

I would recommend a guinea pig :) I got my piggie after my hamster died as well, and while I loved my hamster, I have to say that there's no comparison - my pig is SO much friendlier and cuddlier than my hamster ever was!

Guinea pigs are friendly, social, vocal, and unlike hamsters, they sleep when YOU sleep! I love my little guy to pieces - he makes me laugh every single day.

Piggies are very easy to care for, low-maintenance, and live 5-7 years on average. Since they're so social, they'll love to play and cuddle with you (after they get used to you).

I'm so sorry about your little hamster and hope you find a pet that is right for you.

If you get another pet, you are absolutely sure you can keep up the responsibilities to train, tame, and socialize? My suggestions: A guinea pig. They are adorable, and develop strong bonds with their owners. They are awake during the day AND night, so whenever you're awake they will be too. They have many different coat colors and patterns, if you want a "cool" looking pet, although they should have a large cage. You say you want a reptile? Check your local animal shelter. They usually have a lot of lizards, snakes, geckos. But you should try a frog. Pacman frogs are interesting looking, and they can grow quite big. You can feed them mice and crickets, too ( I personally would never feed them mice. )': Not too big. Beta fish are extremely colorful, and they don't take up space at all. They would be perfect to have in your room. Good luck with your new pet!

Try a Chinchilla ! They don't stink and are easy to care for and they live a very long time !! The only need a dust bath now and then which you buy in the pet store when you get one. They are fun to watch and they can run on a big wheel in thier cage like a hamster! They have really soft fur too. Not much trouble either, just clean cage once a week and during the week you vacum out the poo ! the poo is dry and looks like pellets and can be vacumed right up and don't stink like most pets do !! Thats what i like about them ! I like guenia's and rabbits but i 've had them and they can really start stinking before it's time to clean their cage !! If you get one they need a Two story cage so they climb around and stuff !! don't let it get away either cause they are hard to find and they Hide really well believe me !!!!!

I can totally relate to you. I have had many hamsters and I have loved them all. They have a short life span but we gave each other lots of happiness during that short time. I haven't had a hamster in the last two years because I had a baby, but when she is old enough, I'll be getting us a pet hamster.
Since you love hamsters, I say get another one. They are so small, but can bring so much to our lives.

Rats make good pets i have had both over the years. the only problem is that all rodents don't have a massive life span but you can have a few good years with one so if you love hamsters get another one

Birds are great! Theres a type of bird for every type of person! The smaller the bird, the shorter the life, so if you want one to live around 10 years, go for a parakeet, if you want 20 years go for a conure, I have a 3 year old conure and i 23 year old amazon, and they are great! i love them to death and they are like family, but at the same time pets!
Good Luck!

Birds make good pets. Parakeet (about $20) or a Cocktail (maybe $50, if you lucky). They will live a long time (10-20 years with good care), but, not like a Parrot (around 80 years), which will be expensive and bite your finger off.

Have to go with the cat idea...independent, affectionate( well so is a dog!) but no walks on a cold, wet, breezy, snowy.morning or night.!
If you have kids try putting it to the vote...have a 'wee' meeting and see whats the best & favourite!
Chinchillas are sweet but watch the wiring!!
