My friend and I have a debate: Is he talking about Luke (because of Padme and Anakin's secret marriage) or is he talking about his old master Obi-Wan? I say that he is talking about Luke and she says Obi-Wan. Yet Darth Vader believes both Luke and Obi-Wan to be dead.

He is referring to feeling Obi-Wan. He didn't actually know for sure that Obi-Wan was dead, and he didn't really know about Luke's existence until later. He would be familiar with how Obi-Wan's presence affected the Force. Plus when he goes searching, he goes to Obi-Wan.

Also consider the fact that episode 4 was written as a single movie. Lucas had no belief at the time that it would go beyond that one. The Episode 4 graphic wasn't added until he re-released it with "Empire Strikes Back." At the time, he did not have the idea of Vader being Luke's father, nor of Leia being the sister.

He is talking about Obi-Wan because he can sense the presence of a Jedi Knight.

Sorry I was wrong. Now I have had time to think about it a bit more it was Luke and Obi-wan. I remember the scene,.

The first part of the sentence he senses a Jedi Knight, because Luke is now one. "I sense something"

The last part of the sentence he was talking Obi-Wan.
That was the last time he felt a presence of a Jedi Knight
" a presence I've not felt since" the death of Obi-Wan

I also remember Luke saying that his "presence" by being there could endanger everyone because he knows Darth Vader is after him and can sence him.

I have always assumed he was talking about Obi Wan.

For a start, I believe that the 'presence' is meant to be an individual (such as Obi Wan) and not just any Jedi Knight. If he had known Luke in the past, it was certainly before he had received Jedi training.

It is a typical western theme, the reappearance of an adversary from the past. Obi Wan is the obvious choice for the 'presence' that was sensed, and we certainly aren't given any reasons to look further afield.

Occam's razor, you know.

Definately Obi-Wan.

I'd say it was more Obi Wan as Vader seemed to become "uptight" over it. If it had been Padme's spirit or soul which Luke and/or Leia would have "inherited" in some way, Vader might have sensed it when they first arrested Leia in Epidode IV (The first film).

He is talking about Obi-Wan. At the time he would not have even known about Luke's existance. The reference is to his familiarity to Obi-Wan's presence, his connection to the force if you will, his unique energy.

He's talking about Obi-Wan because he didn't even know Luke & Leia were born when he last saw Obi-Wan.
