I'd say some kind of double major: journalism + X, where X is business, science, economics. The specialists tend to have an easier time of it. Especially since getting into a newspaper straight out of college is so tough (see all those layoffs recently at the LATimes and Time?) So if you're a science journo out of school, you could a) get your foot in the door or b) write as a freelancer for a while before a).

I have been mulling over this matter, too, and I think Bruce N has a very good idea there ~ points to report. I would be glad to see something like that introduced, along with some other measures I've been thinking of. No time now, but I'd like to post some more regarding this. Good on you for drawing this sort of thing to general attention! Cheers :-)
