Make some BUTTONS! To use on a wool winter coat, or to replace on a denim shirt, or as embellishments for window treatments.

Ashtray, spare change dish, piggy bank, a little 6"x6"x6" box (this was actually a project we were assigned when I was in 6th grade, I was a bit too much into toilet humor, and for the theme I went all literal and made the top of the box a tiled bathroom floor with a toilet. I went way overboard and had a plunger up there, a magazine, the top of the toilet tank came off... yeah. It was fun though.) Faces, Animals, Cars, Statues, Stamps (just roll out a slab and carve a design into it. This was another art project I had but from 4th or 5th grade, but we did it with pieces of thick vinyl) You can still make a pot, but you'd have to do pinch pots or rope pots. For more elaborate ideas just do a google image search for pottery - and if you're getting too many vases and pots search for "pottery -vases -pots".

I know I'm too late for your class tonight...but used to do a lot of pottery and had a great time with it.
How about coffee cups with animals for handles? I did a really cool one with a frog handle once.
Or if you are working with slabs at all you could create an 'alter' that you could carve and attach formed pieces to, you could set it up so you could put a piece of mirror and/or a candle inside.
You can make incsense stick holders, coasters...containers of all sorts. And surface textures can be really fun too. I used to use different types of fabric to get interesting textures. Heavier linens or burlap or that stiff mess that tutus are made with all make really cool textures. You can also imprint on the surface, I used to find tools all around the house that made interesting impressions.

A platter, beads and a Coil Vase. Everyone can use a good vase. You can then have a dinner party and wear the beads, while serving dinner on the platter which will be next to the vase.

If this is the kind of class where you get to sit at a wheel and throw the pot, I would make a cute little pot or catch all dish.

I made a coil pot with a snake warp around it. A stab pot of your own verison of pandora box. A pierce pot that can go over candles. A pinch pot that look like an indian artifact.

i've done quite a bit of sculpting and have a collection of noses...ethnic noses are really interesting. you can have hollows for the eyes and the noses can be somewhat twisted artistically.
