I'll be 41 weeks in 4 days, this is my second child (my first I had 9 years ago) I'm 3 cm dilated and 50% effaced my due date was 1/19/07. I had my membranes swiped last week, nothing no labor just back pain and some mild cramps. My mucus plug came out Friday night and part of saturday. I feel miserable, my doc said we would discuss being induced if I made it to tomorrow's appointment, so my question to all you is How will this work?? Anyone been in my situation and what was it like step by step. What should I be mentally prepared for??

And the best part about pitocin is that the contractions don't stop when the kid is born!!!!

You should be induced as carrying a baby beyond the 40th week has an increased risk of stillbirth due to the uterine conditions deteriorating. All they do is put an IV in your arm and give you Pitocin, a synthetic form of Oxytocin (the hormone you produce natrually to stimulate contractions). Your water will probably also be broken. The labor starts out pretty hard, but is very short compared to natural labor. You will probably want an epidural. I was induced w/ my daughter and had her in 4 1/2 hours (very short time for 1st time moms). I'm 22 weeks along now and hope to be induced again! It's not that bad.

Basically the baby comes when he or she is ready. I was late and got induced it was not a bad expereince for me, it also was my second child 7 years in between. I got the gel twice before they finally gave me the potasin---I was only in labor for 2 and a half hours. I think it all depends on you, I know you are miserable, I remember that well. The plug coming out is a good sign, mentally be prepared for anything just like the first time.
Think Positive women have babies every day! Good luck and hopefully it will go as well for you as it did for me.

They will bring you into the hospital and hook you up to an IV of Pitocin. They start out with a low dose and increase it over time. Once you get going they will probably break your water to help spead things along. For me, I was started on the Pitocin at about 8pm, my water was broken at about 11:30 pm, I started feeling painful contractions at about 12:30 am. I delivered my son at 9:43 am the next day. You are more dilated than I was, but it seemed to me that the Pitocin made things progress very slowly. Good luck and get an epidural.

I was induced all 3 pregnancies, so I really have nothing else to compare it to.
I've been told the contractions are harder and faster than "normal", but if you have an epidural, it won't matter that much.
The biggest thing is getting the IV for the pitocin and being hooked up to the fetal monitor constantly, so you cab't get out of bed and walk around.
There is a higher risk of C-section, but right now, the main issue is healthy baby/healthy mom-- however that gets accomplished.
Hang in there!!

You will probably go in at six o'clock on Tuesday and be prepped. This would consist of all the paperwork and information on you medical history unless you have already done so. Then you will be taken to a delivery room, given a gown to get into and be hooked up to the fetal monitors and have your blood pressure monitor every fifteen to thirty minutes. Depending on your doctor's preference they may go ahead and break your water and start you on pitocin. Through out all this you MAY have to remain in the bed. After your water is broke they will go ahead and insert a catheter. Then it will be the waiting game until your contractions are close enough and you are dilated enough to push. Congratulation and Good Luck!

k you have been through labor before right well if they induce you it will be a little bit worse for you cause it brings on the labor pains way worse then normal and i mean worse,i have had this done while having my first child to all they will do is put a needle in you and some drugs and that will bring on the labor pains really hard and make you dilate even faster and the pains stronger at least that's how they were for me anyways hope this is somewhat a good enough answer for you and good luck and congrats

I have been induced with both my babies. Both times I had pitocin(spell?).That is a drug given in an IV that starts labor. But sometimes if you are already dilated they will just break your water to start labor. Your best bet is to ask your doctor how he/she plans to induce. I know how terrible you feel. The last part of pregnancy is the pits. But trust me soon enough you will be cuddling that little baby. Good Luck.

Nothing to be afraid of.

You will more than likely go to the doctor tomorrow and he will schedule the induction. You usually go in first thing in the morning to the hospital where they will hook you up to a fetal monitor and a ptosin drip via I.V.

This will bring on contractions and they will periodically turn the pitosin drip up if the baby is tolerating it so that the contractions become stronger and closer together. You will experience labor just as you would have if it happened naturally.

I had to be induced with both my boys.

Well #1 they should walk u through everything tomorrow step by step. Everyones expierences are different...but I went in and got my IV's then the epidural then they began with pitosin to induce. It is an IV drug to make you begin to have contractions. Although it depends on how many and how well the childbirth is progressing. They may have to do a c-section depending on how the baby and you are doing. Usually once they give you the drug to get the baby moving and you in labor it usually doesn't take that long...but talk to them don't worry have a positive attitude, your gonna meet your little one soon.
GOOD LUCK!

well 1st they will give u an IV then they will break your water if it dosent break its self. they do this by sticking a really skinny plastic stick in you. then they push out all the water and when your contractions get pretty close and pain ful they will offfer you the epideral. it takes about 5 hrs from the time they start the IV to the time you have the baby. I have 3 kids and was induced all 3 times. i only had to push for like 15-25 mins for all 3.
