These are desert animals. If its for less than a week, cucumber, apples, pears, grapes...are great, please no tomato leaves, potatoes, oranges or kiwi fruit, or chestnuts, they are poisonous!
Aheavy pocelain bowl is just fine, but clean it every day.
Hamsters need no grooming from humans, and swim better than you (pls. don't test this!

Do you have the money to buy another water bottle? If not thats ok, you can put a dish in there but it cant have any more than a centimeter of water in it. Depending on your hamster it could have more, but most hamsters arent thebrightest when it comes to that. If you put a bowl in there and are afraid of your pet drawing then find somthing that will act like a cage to put over the bowl so it can only touch the top of the water. If all else fails put a wet cloth in the cage (dont soak it ) but put enough water on it so it can suck the water off of it.

Unfortunately, alot of the employees at pet stores don't know everything they should about the animals they sell. A little bowl will be fine. I like the idea about a peanut butter lid, that way you know, for your own peace of mind, that there is no danger of drowning, LOL. As a matter of fact, a little known fact is that bowls are better than the bottles. The bottles can hurt their mouths.

Sure you can put water in a bowl. That sales person is bull. If that were the case I'd have dead ones fom that. Our pet store I deal with uses food bowls for the water. You'll just need to keep changing the water more often if there's litter in it. I have to train to use the bottle after I get them. Just make sure the bowl is heavy bottomed so it won't tip over.

Until you can get a new water dispenser, use a shallow lid from a jar. I did this with my pet m ice, it worked out fine. Grab a lid from a jam or peanut butter jar - nothing more than about an inch deep though.
Only problem is they tend to throw straw/litter/food/etc in the water a lot, so you'll need to change it frequently.
