For 8th-9th grade I'd recommend:

Got Fangs? and Circus of the Darned by Katie Maxwell which have both romance and comedy in them.

The Louise Rennison books mentioned before I would also recommend.

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer is my constant recommendation. More romance/action then humor, although there are a couple parts which made me smile.

I also have a book out called The Shadow Within which is a paranormal romance/adventure with a couple funny parts if you're interested.

With both romance and comedy, "Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging" by Louise Rennison and "The Boyfriend List" by E. Lockhart are recommended by my 10th grade daughter.

Louise Rennison also has additional titles if your child enjoys the book noted.

Have you read "The Little Prince" by Antoine de Saint-Exupery? It's a must for anyone interested in fantasy and a bit of philosophy via the thought of a little boy from another star. In fact, the original is in French, so if you can read French, I think you'd appreciate more. However the English version published by Penguin is enjoyable and readable.

Catcher in the Rye. Cats Cradle, A Brave new world, The Great Gabsy. Shouldn't they be reading their school books on history, science, & math?

Tarzan of the Apes, by Edgar R. Burroughs. Some romance, plenty of adventure.

I would say that H.G Wells' "War of the Worlds", or "I robot" by Isaac Asimov could be adequate and interesting
