Isn't it better to cut your losses and live to fight another day, than to burn all your resources at once?

Look at the military history of the Revolutionary War, and count the number of times GEORGE WASHINGTON retreated... If he hadn't, we wouldn't even have a country. Anyone care to revise their answer??

It all depends on what you are doing. In some cases yes, in others, no. That's a very vague question so it has to be answered with a vague answer. Anything else is just misleading.
