but I dont know how to go about asking. I pay my rent to a property managent who then pays my landlord from there...I have never met my landlord (or know his/her name). I have been living in the building now for 4 months. When I moved in they were just starting renovations to the outside of the building and said the renos would be completed within 5 months. End of February will be long past 5 months and the work crew just said today that they will be at LEAST another TEN months before the building is completed! Yesterday they nailed the door to my deck closed because they are redoing all the decks (I was not aware they were doing this before I moved in) leaving me with ONE exit in the case of a fire. I am in a three bedroom apartment with my daughter and expecting a new baby in 8 days....I pay 750 per month for this dwelling. Would I be unreasonable in asking for a 100 dollar reduction on this rent just until the renos are COMPLETE?

It may be illegal to have just one exit, you should check with the local building code.

I would write a very reasonable letter to the property management company and ask them to forward it to the landlord. I would give all the reasons you've stated, and ask for a specific reduction until renovations are completed. I would also remind him/her that it would cost them more if the apartment were unoccupied for even a couple of weeks until it was re-rented. Leave out the part about being pregnant, I think. A reasonable landlord may accomodate you and it doesn't hurt to ask, but try to sound very nice and accomodating in the letter.

Since you state you haven't been late with the rent I am assuming that the landlord is asking for it before it is due? If this is the case I would just tell the landlord that they will have it on the first. Now, however, if it is due on the first and they are asking for it on the first, then there is nothing wrong. I only mention this because I have had tenants in the past tell me that I shouldn't call for the rent on the 2nd because it is not late until after the 5th (I give a 5 day grace period before a late charge is imposed). this only happens once because I explain to them to read the lease. Rent is due on the first. The only reason there is a grace period is because I am nice and give a couple days in case the check is lost in the mail. The reason i call on the second is so they know I haven't gotten it yet and have time to cut me another check since obviously the first was lost in the mail since I haven't received it by the due date.

your 'landlord' is probably some company. You'll just have to ask the property management and they'll pass the word on... I doubt they would lower the rent though. You don't really have a case even in the courts.

If you have a lease,read it to see if there is any clause about maintaining quality standards and use of all the spaces that you are renting,if there is one go to the office and demand a decrease.
If you do not have a lease you could go to the office and treaten to move,but you got to be ready to do just that.

contact the property management co. and tell them you dont feel you should have to pay full rent for less than full use of the apt. and grounds
