We are an Irish American family. Our daughter is Norah. Both of us love the name Ailish. We however have heard both positives and negatives from family and friends. So looking for other opinions. Thanks a lot

I agree, it may sound like eyelash, but I can think of a lot worse things to be called. I do think kids can be mean. I think any name can be made fun of. I was smelly Kelly, and I really did not smell.

I think its a beautiful name and it goes great with Norah. I wouldn't take friends and family opinions to heart. Whatever name you choose they'll love (eventually lol) I can see a girl with the name Ailish as being a blond or reddish hair, shy, quiet, and graceful.
only have of my family like my son's name, after he was born they didn't care about the name. they were all so happy that he was here. I'm sure it will be the came for your child. Good Luck

I think there's too much room for mispronunciation and teasing. Kids today are crueler than ever and I'd be afraid your child would go through school as "Eyelash" or "Deelish" or some other silly twisting of the name.
It's great to want your child to have an unusual or unique name, but I think Ailish would open your child to unwanted attention. Are there other names from your heritage that you both like almost as well? You might want to at least consider a few other options before deciding.

Try the name out yourself.
Go to a bar or other "meeting place" and introduce yourself as Ailish. See what the reaction is to the name. It will give you a glimps into the world your daughter will live it -- whether that is positive or negative.

Its a very cute name but yes it really does sound a lot like eyelash!! Maybe add an 'A' to the end of to make Ailisha, Similar sound and still very pretty just a bit harder to tease!
Good luck =)

I like Ailish and people will have problems pronouncing it correctly too. That goes with a lot of names.

We are having the same problem. Some people tell us they like a name we have picked out and some have told us not to name him that. I think you should take a step back, you and your husband pick a name, and if you two like it then everyone else will learn to like it.

For a boy or a girl? Either way it sounds like a licorice-type candy or light irish beer.
