Have you ever made your own t-shirt transfers?

I have an inkjet printer, and I want to buy some iron-on transfer paper and make a few t-shirts (some white shirts, some colored). What's the best brand of paper to buy? I've noticed how expensive it is, and I don't want to waste money and shirts on bad paper. Also, can I cut it into shapes after I print it but before I iron it on, or do I have to print rectangular pictures? Any additional tips would be appreciated. Thanks!

It's cheap and easy. First, use only 100% cotton shirts.

There are two kinds of transfers available . . . those to go on dark shirts and those to go on white or light-colored shirts. The transfers for dark-colored shirts have a white background. Believe me, you can't see them well if you use the transparent paper for the dark shirts.

Yes you can cut them into any shape you want. Trimming is not that important on the light-colored shirts, since the background is transparent.

All of the paper seems to work well. I've used Avery and Office Max Brand with good results. Do it on a flat table, not an ironing board.

Just follow the directions.

I've decorated t-shirts with iron on transfers. I didn't think they were expensive - maybe $7 for a package of 6 sheets. I believe my instructions say to use 50/50, not 100% cotton, but I did use 100% cotton as that's all I could find. Yes you could cut it into shapes. Or just print it out in 5X7's, or 4X6's, whatever your computer program does. I had my iron too hot - it leaves brownish scorch marks. Too cool is not good either; it has to be just right. Wash in cold water for the first 2-3 times or so to keep the color locked in and avoid fading. I dried it on a clothesline.
Mine was T-shirt transfers made by Avery and bought at Wal*Mart. You could always put it on a cloth bag or apron so it doesn't get washed so often. Make sure the package says Ink Jet.

Transfer paper is really expensive and not really a good product as the image washes out pretty fast. You can check at your local college student store or with an Art department teacher as to getting some samples or trek down to a local t-shirt shop that does transfers. I used to have stacks of the stuff, when I had a silkscreen shop and I had very few satisfied customers when it came to transfers. Some of the new ink-jet transfer paper is DYI friendly and gives you immediate satisfaction if you aren't concerned with longevity of the product you create. You can cut the paper up and lay it out as you want and have a lot of fun with it if that's all you expect from it. T-shirts are too darn expensive to test the stuff out on, so use some old white t-shirts to do your testing.
