Part of the reason is supply and demand.
It used to be that the only ones needing diesel were 18 wheelers and a few Mercedes.
Then came the gas shortages in 1974 and 1979. Everyone was jumping on the diesel bandwagon, because it was cheaper and more available.

Diesel fuel has a higher BTU/gallon content than gasoline. This is part of the reason why diesels get better mileage than traditional gas. Also, much fewer gas stations have diesel, and it is burned at a high rate due to its main application being in heavy trucks.

Because gasoline is a higher volume product. Diesel fuel is low volume by comparison and has higher distruibtion and refining costs involved.
