It started in 2001 due to 9-11. Because of the attack, all of the leagues post-poned their games for a week. Because of the lost weekend, they re-scheduled the games, and ended up playing the Superbowl a week late in Feb. Even the World Series that year was late, playing the "October classic" in November.
Since then, the NFL starts the week after Labor day to keep the game in Feb.

Games were delayed after September 11th, 2001. All the games that week were cancelled, and the season ran a week late. The Super Bowl that year was in February. The NFL decided that the schedule worked, and installed a bye week to give players more rest time.

probably with the addition of new teams, the season got lengthened. There have been a few new ones, most recently the Houston team.
