It really depends on the person playing the guitar . Everyone has their own opinions to which year was the best. Although most seem to agree that the 1942 Gibson J-45 Flat Top Acoustic Guitar was probably the best year.

Acoustics would be pre World War 2
Electrics would likely be a toss up between right now and 1957 to 1962.

1961 was the best for SG's. 58 and 59 Les Pauls are a pretty big deal too.
