My epidural never worked when the doctor attempted to administer it. So I had a drug free labor. I have heard from lots of people that this is very rare. I was wondering if anyone else had this awful, painful experience or know of anyone who has.

I may not have been specific enough when describing my experience. The needle would not go in at all after several attempts and it hit bone every time.. It was the worst pain ever..by far worst than my strongest contractions..I was induced with pitocin also if that makes a difference...The doctor asked me if I had ever been diagnosed with scoliosis and the answer is no..I have no idea what kept the epidural from even getting close to being where it should be...I would like to know though! Thanks!

i've never heard of that happening the way you described. i've always been terrified of the thought of an epidural because in the child development type classes i have taken we were taught that there is a very small space where the needle can correctly be inserted and if done incorrectly it usually causes paralysis.

I had an epidural with my first baby and it took only for like fifteen minutes and then I was in pain again. I tried to lay there and let my body relax and do what it was suppose to and ended up having like three or four more rounds of medicine in a twelve hour time frame. I ended up having a c-section due to having my water broke for twelve hours. They gave me another round before taking me into the OR but I could still feel everything. After my baby was out and I knew that there were no side effects that would hurt my baby I asked for something and they gave me morphine as they stitched me up. My baby was too big to pass through the birth canal and as soon as my doc pulled her out he was amazed at how much she weighted because I lost like twenty pounds. She was wedged between my left hip and my right ribs. Kinda weird but I am 32 weeks pregnant with a boy this time and if things go as planned I am having an ultrasound in a month to determine weight and size so I will not have to go through labor if he is too big. They would automatically do another c-section which I don't want, but I also don't want to lay there in the hospital for another twelve hours and not have a successful vaginal delivery. The epidural was blamed for slowing my contractions down and not letting labor progress.

With my first baby the anestesioligist didn't hit the bone but on the first try he said he got some spinal fluid which aparently was not suppose to. He tried again and thankfully got it right. I had a c-section so I had to have drugs lol. The only problem with getting the spinal fluid was they told me not to raise my head for 24 hours or I would get a really bad headache.

I had one with my second baby ..It didn`t hit bone but it didn`t work either!!! They kept putting more and more medicine in but I felt everything and they told me they could try and place it again if I wanted them to but I asked to be checked to see how far I was and by the time they did that (45minutes later!!) I was ready to push and decided to go on without it!!! With my daughter I didn`t have anything for pain (birthing center) and I am 12 1/2 weeks now and I still don`t know what I want to do!!
