The two people in the marriage has to define this word "successful" as a couple. However, there are basic ingredients to having a joyful, peace, exciting, content and fulfilling marriage despite its ups/downs. First of all, Having unrealistic expectations from the beginning of the marriage is defeating the purpose of your matrimony union. Get rid of these...know that no one is perfect...and no one can be changed but inhence which is a work in progress for growth for both husband/wife. To me a successful marriage is a marriage that is based on trust and honesty and communication and commitment... A successful marriage takes two unselfish people working together to make the marriage a great one. Treating the other person the way you want to be treated. God is the center of a successful and wonderful marriage as well...

A successful marriage is when the husband mistreated, abused his wife and cheated on her. Or when a wife abused, mistreated her husband and cheated on him. I know that this doesn't sound healthy, but the truth hurts. There is no such thing a love anymore. Marriages today are nothing more than unhollied matrimonies.

One which has stood the ravages of time and the tests of crisis such as personal issues, physical injuries, interference of In-Laws,Snide remarks of so called well wishers,Maybe even a couple of infatuations outside each other ,financial disasters.....................I have seen one such marriage, the couple were somewhere in their seventies, ther was no need for a spoken word to communicate, they knew exactly what was needed from each other without saying anything, the easy body language said it all, and of course their white hair!
