When the NFL was started there was only half the teams. Lamar Hunt wanted to join the league with his team the Dallas Texans, but he was denied. As a result he started what was known as the American Football League. The AFL grew in popularity and they decided to combine the two leagues. They were divided into todays current conferences, the American conference and the National conference.
