Yep, you absolutely need a passport now. I just checked a month ago when we were thinking about driving to Mexico on vacation. They didn't require it in the past, but now you must have it.

If you apply for you passport now, I would imagine you'd get it back by the spring break. Get your pictures taken and apply as soon as you can.

A passport would be the best form of ID, but if you don't have one, take your Driver's License AND birth certificate. I'm not sure how to get a passport, but I have heard that you can get them from your local Post Office.

I think that with new laws, you must have a passport. Go to your local post office, and they should be able to help you. I would go asap because sometimes it takes 6-8 weeks to get one.
