It's perhaps not spell checkers but maybe that there is less regard paid to correct spelling in schools these days. After all, there is not a great deal of difference between using a spell checker or using a dictionary. Another possible cause of the poor spelling and grammar that occurs nowadays is the constant use of mobile phone text messages. Many folks seem to get so used to the abbreviations they use in their text messages that they forget how to spell the full word.
