Back with Win2000/ME/ etc. you could easily get out of a "freeze" or lock up just by using the "above"..... abhor this Win XP, it takes almost a 3=step process and a long time waiting to close out programs that seem to stick/freeze. I tend to turn off the comp (wrong way of course--) in aggravation. Isn't there an easier/quicker way?

When you do turn off the comp the "wrong" way, make sure you hold the power button down until it goes off... I've heard that's better for it.

You could be adding to the trouble each time you turn off your computer incorrectly. A lot of information is stored in RAM and settings are not stored until you go through shut down. By doing a power off, you're really causing you're own problems.
But the real question is why you're getting so many freeze-ups?
Run Spybot in safe mode (F8 on boot) and get rid of any programs from Add/remove programs in control panel. Run a virus scan, and if possible, run a registry cleaner.

Is your system updated with the latest updates? Be sure to do that. Sometimes you'll have to re-install some software that is causing the freeze-ups, but sounds more like Spyware.

I'm with Elanor on this. Makes me wonder, though, why you're having to do it (so much).
