Me and my housemate are the only names stated are on the standard assured shorthold tenancy agreement and hence legally the tenants of the flat. Her boyfriend is here for average 3 days a week and stays overnight. As the other tenant, do I have the right to say no to that? Her friend does not contribute to the expenses of the flat but does the laundry, watches TV, use of shower etc. She insists that this is well within her rights to have visitors, which she feels infringed when I asked that her friend should only stay a maximum of 2 nights per week. Anyone have any website that is from an authoritative source or any other ideas that could dismiss her argument?

Time to find a new roommate. She should at least be considerate enough so you can have your own personal space. About legality? You need to look at your contract, some say that you are not allowed to have regular guest always over.
"A guest may be a visitor or a family member of the owner who has entered the premises with the owner or tenant’s permission. The guest may occasionally share minor expenses, but they do not pay rent. If the guest refuses to leave when asked, then the owner or tenant may seek to evict him by filing a civil action called a Wrongful Detainer with the District Court alleging that he is the rightful occupant of the premises and that the defendant refuses to leave. "
Your roommate should respect your space that YOU are paying for.

Read the lease. It may provide details regarding guests. It is an interesting question. Does a person on the lease have the right to "veto" a guest. I would have to say yes. Lets say you had an altercation with the guest or thought they were stealing your things what would you do? Then ask the question can you do the same thing without any reason, except for the fact you are on the lease and there is someone on the property that you do not want there.
I can tell you there a lot of foks may guess at this, but you may need to talk to an attorney to get an exact answer.
DO NOT accept payment for utilities, rent, etc. This may give the person additional rights.
If you have the right to bar the person from the apartment, then have a talk with your roommate and set some guidelines.

That's a hard question to answer correctly.

You and your housemate are responsible for the lease. Both of you could get by with someone staying overnight for 3 days/nights per week (its less than 50% of the time).

It seems it more of a question on what you & your housemate would agree to. She would probably make a comment, that you could have guests over for a few nights per week. But would probably prefer it wasn't on the nights her friend was over.

This is a question you and your housemate should have discussed before signing a lease together. How many more months are you obligated for?

Yes it is legal. But do you have to put up with it no. If this person is not contributing to the expense of the house you should ask that they do so, or stop using the amenities.

Visit your local citizens advice bureau and ask for their advice whether it's right. I do think it's unfair personally that you are paying half 50/50 with your friend and covering her b/f's useage.
